Join Bethel-based artist Rebecca Zicarelli for a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to turn locally sourced minerals into your own usable paint pigments. You’ll work through the full process using traditional tools and techniques, including mulling.
By the end of the session, you’ll leave with your own hand-processed pigments and a mulling kit to keep experimenting at home.
Rebecca Zicarelli is a self-taught artist based in Bethel, Maine, who creates art using locally sourced natural pigments from plants and minerals. Deeply inspired by the western Maine landscape, she leads workshops under the name Village Blues, teaching techniques like natural dyeing, shibori, pigment extraction, and upcycling using organic practices. She collaborates with local organizations such as the Mahoosuc Land Trust and works at the Habitat For All garden, where she creates art with visitors using plants grown on-site. A volunteer at the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, she also experiments with mineral-based pigments from regional geology.
Rebecca teaches widely sharing knowledge of traditional and revived techniques, including the creation of historic pigments like Maya blue, while fostering community engagement through hands-on art experiences.
Space is limited to six participants. Participants should check in with museum store staff upon arrival.
