Event Description
In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum invites you to meet famous women geologists and scientists — the brilliant women who reshaped science while facing barriers as solid as granite!
Join MMGM Education Outreach Coordinator Deb Johnson at Bethel Library for an engaging, family-friendly presentation highlighting groundbreaking women in geology, astronomy, and paleontology.
You’ll meet:
- Florence Bascom — pioneering geologist and the first woman hired by the U.S. Geological Survey
- Marie Curie — Nobel Prize–winning physicist and chemist who revolutionized our understanding of radioactivity
- Hypatia — ancient mathematician and astronomer who taught in Alexandria nearly 1,600 years ago
Discover how these women — and others whose names are less widely known — pushed past exclusion, prejudice, and professional barriers to advance our understanding of Earth and space.
Perfect for students, families, educators, and anyone curious about science history, this free program connects past pioneers to today’s STEM leaders.
Celebrate Women’s History Month by learning about the scientists who truly rocked the world.
