The Discovery Gallery

Creating a Curious Community Learning Center 

The Discovery Gallery is an open storage exhibit, community gathering place and public learning center. Included within the gallery is an interactive exhibit entitled, The Geologic History of Maine, which introduces rock types, Maine’s bedrock map and the geologic timescale map. The open storage design allows the public to observe aspects of MMGM’s stored collection in a systematic, accessible way, providing hands-on learning, and opportunities for active self-discovery. This concept supports geoscience education through the Museum’s broad collection of minerals by town and species, as well as worldwide minerals and specimens from the museum’s internationally recognized collection of meteorites.
Community engagement is a priority for MMGM. Our gathering space within the Discovery Gallery will become a permanent location to foster direct relationships with visitors, enhance educational experiences for students, and be a catalyst for coordination and collaboration among school groups and community organizations.
