This rock is so full of inclusions, or ‘xenoliths’, that is resembles a conglomerate, a common sedimentary rock. It is, however, an igneous rock. The dark colored matrix was originally molten magma that travelled upward through the earth’s crust. As the magma ascended it picked up numerous fragments of metamorphic and igneous rocks before it solidified.
