MMGM takes discovery on the road to the Zadoc Library. Education Outreach Coordinator Deb Johnson has fun science books and STE(A)M activities lined for youngsters throughout July.

Bring your little geologists-in-training and start investigating rocks!

  • June 26, 11 a.m. PreK–2  | Read Aloud 
    Old Rock: by  Deb Pilutti. Examine some cool  “old rocks” from Maine and make your very own pet rock!

  • July 9, 2 p.m. Gr 3 & up | STEaM: Granite & Building Bridges
    Can you identify granite? Learn about why famous Maine Quarries are now swimming holes. Test your engineering skills with some sweet building blocks that may (or may not) form an arch.

  • July 10,  11 a.m. Pre K–2  | Read aloud 
    How to Catch a Dinosaur,” by Adam Wallace. Everyone wants to catch a T Rex! Look at some real fossils and make a simple “fake” fossil to bring home.

  • July 16, 2 p.m. Gr 3 & up | STEaM: DINO Bones 
    In this session you will meet the woman who identified the first pterodactyl. Wait….did someone steal all of Maine’s dinosaur fossils? Make  your own “fossil” to bring home and discover Pertica and Hairy-It!!

  • July 17, 11 a.m.  Pre K-2  | Read Aloud
    Julie the Rock Hound,” by Gail Langer Karwoski. We will read about a young “rockhound”  discovering amazing crystals that can be found in your own backyard. Let’s examine some of Maine’s precious crystals.

  • July 30, 2 p.m. Gr 3 & up | STEaM:  Crystal Structures
    What is the difference between a crystal and a rock? Discover why diamonds are more than just pretty.  Experiment with making some take home crystals.
