Join the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum for a hands-on field experience at the Tamminen–Waisanen Quarry, one of Maine’s notable pegmatite localities. Led by MMGM Curator and Staff Geologist Myles Felch, this guided trip offers a unique opportunity to explore Maine’s rich mining history while learning how to identify minerals in the field — alongside the experts.
Participants will receive an introduction to pegmatite geology, mineral formation, and the historical significance of quarrying in Western Maine. After a short primer, attendees will have the chance to collect their own mineral specimens and ask questions throughout the experience.

- Basic mineral identification techniques
- Guided collecting experience at an active quarry site
- Informal Q&A with a professional geologist

- Rock hammer and collecting tools
- Safety goggles
- Bucket or bag for collecting specimens
- Water and a light snack

This is an outdoor, hands-on collecting experience on uneven terrain. Participants should wear appropriate footwear and use caution while collecting.
