Catch one of the Moon’s most fascinating optical illusions—visible for only a few hours each month.

As the first quarter Moon rises, sunlight strikes the rims of three lunar craters at just the right angle, creating the appearance of a bright “X” against the surrounding shadows. Known as the Lunar X, this remarkable feature is a favorite among amateur astronomers and can only be seen during a brief window each lunar cycle.

Join the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum for this free sidewalk observing event and see the Lunar X for yourself through a telescope before the sky gets dark. Museum staff will be on hand to explain why this unique phenomenon occurs and answer your questions about our nearest celestial neighbor.
