Art made from pieces of Maine History.
Maine Gemstones, Transformed Into Art
In the early 1970s, an extraordinary discovery at the Dunton Quarry in Newry, Maine, brought an exceptional quantity of gem-quality tourmaline to light. Known as the Big Find, this discovery became an important chapter in Maine’s mineral history.
Today, the legacy of that discovery extends beyond the mine. The Big Find Collection brings together exceptional jewelry and crafted pieces made with Maine gemstones, showcasing the beauty of these materials through the work of accomplished artists and craftspeople.
These one-of-a-kind creations represent some of the finest uses of Maine gemstones in contemporary jewelry and lapidary art. Their artistry and distinction place them alongside the remarkable gemstone masterpieces celebrated in the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum’s galleries.
After being exhibited at museums in Texas, Oregon, and California, the collection is returning to MMGM. The pieces are available for purchase, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire an extraordinary work featuring Maine gemstones.
